During the 1959 eruption of Kīlauea Iki (November 14 to December 20), the fern and `ōhi`a forest was partially covered with tephras, that is, small pieces of lava solidified during their journey through the air while they were projected as parts of up to 1,900-foot-high lava fountains... Slowly, the vegetation is coming back.
